Nuclear Medicine

Overview

Nuclear Medicine is the art and science of diagnosing and/or treating disease with radioactive material. Most of our work in this field involves tests for various symptoms or diseases, such as Bone scans for pain or tumors and Heart scans for chest pain and coronary artery disease. Our main site is in the Acute Care Facility of the Anne Arundel Medical Center, where there are three gamma cameras, uptake probes, Geiger counters, well counters, dose calibrators, and other equipment to perform these tests and treatments. Outpatient testing is also performed at the Sajak Pavilion. PET scanning has become the sate-of-the-art imaging test for cancer and is available in the Oncology Center and at the Sajak Pavilion.
